I got some things that are, in terms of color, way closer to my own skin.

On the leftside of the picture of my hand you can see the make-up I used to use.
A dark brown foundation and in the center a black shadow color.

On the rightside of the picture of my hand, you can see I used a new foundation. Same shadow color used in the center.

As I explained I will keep using make-up to apply shadow contours matching the CG renders of these characters. This, for all to read, means I'd also do a make-up job on a true native-american, if a true native-american would walk around in this costume.

I deleted just about every deviation related to AC where you could see some skin color. Mostly the insensitivity on my part could be traced to me changing my skin tone for Connor. To that I agree and that is what I apologized for.

I myself donnot and ever will regard the Altair make-up job as being insesitive in anyway... I have caucasian friends that have darker eyes and skin tones then what I did with that character and the base colors used, appart from the shadow effects did not differ all that much from my own skin color.

This means you can expect a rather simmilair make-up job for my future portrayal of Connor, as I did with Altair.

I think the picture speaks for itself.

If you have any questions or remarks, please feel free to post or send a message (that goes out to all people on Tumblr aswell, I want to have this thing set straight.)

Nice makeup explanation :) Thanks for taking the time to think about this and make changes, however big or small, in order to respect the struggles of PoC who have to deal with whitewashing, black- and yellow-facing, and most annoying of all, people going "You're making too big a deal out of this!". I love that you have so many fans who support you, but I love even more that you realize that changing skin color for a costume IS a big deal and respecting that. Knowing you're sensitive to these concerns makes you that much cooler.

Well I'm not here to hurt anyone.
I did discover something recently....
I could use the original colors I used for Connor for Edward aswell though... With the Caribean life he is bound to have a severe tan... He's blond though as am I. Would it be bad to darken my skin color for Edward Kenway, him being caucasian? I am not going to, but it does raise a question...
What about the new Lone Ranger film coming out by Disney. Mr. Depp plays a native American and pretty stereotypical from what I gather from the trailer. Is that bad? Like I said, I am not here to hurt anyone and the matter is way to delicate to be messing around with. I do think the matter isn't clearly defined however. Perhaps that is the best reason to stay clear from it.

Well, Caucasian blonde guy with a tan... Since that's established as canon, I don't think that's racist at all. Darkening one's skin comes across as a racist action (to me) when it's a white person playing a completely different race--for example, a white girl wants to cosplay Korra and opts to darken her skin rather than concentrate on cosplay details (which seems like more trouble, honestly--why not just make a really nice cosplay?) But since Edward is already white, it is not the same.

(Personally I get weirded out by anyone who drastically changes their skin color, be it people who obsessively tan or dark-skinned people who slather on fairness creme. If it's more than two shades lighter/darker, it just comes across as jarring. Again, this is my personal opinion.)

As for Johnny Depp in the Lone Ranger film, I would prefer not to watch it purely because Johnny Depp playing Tonto means that it took a job away from a new actor (especially a Native American actor) that could have benefited from the role more--it's not exactly like he's hurting for facetime or needs more jobs (same with Helena Bonham Carter, who as fabulous as she is does not need to play another of the same sort of role). Depp!Tonto also seems to be a more stilted sort of Capt. Jack Sparrow, which is...not as amusing as one might hope.

You are indeed right, the matter is not clearly defined. Everyone has different opinions and it even varies from case to case. As far as I'm concerned, you can do whatever you like (which makes your current choice even more wonderful, because you decided to be respectful rather than obstinate); after all, you are not playing to any sort of malicious or casually cruel stereotype. You are also not altering your facial structure (ex. taping eyelids, padding cheeks, etc), so that's good too. On the other hand, I am annoyed with all the yellowfacing in the Cloud Atlas film because when it looks really, really bad, and that makes me wonder if white people think *I* look that way.

It's definitely a difficult, emotionally-charged subject.

Amen.
It's the first alinea however that was the major point in this whole debate I think(regarding me that is.) I was called ignorant for doing the blackface thing without taking notice. True, I did not know this would cause such a hastle.
I beieve with a full honest heart the problem lies in the "racial thoughts" idea. I DONNOT think in races or colors... species... yes, but I don't think anyone would make a fuzz of I'd try to cosplay a Ninja Turtle.... If that makes me ignorant, then I like being ignorant. (There was this South Park episode about the national flag of south park... 4 white guys hanging a black guy. Everyone got insane in a South Park way. The kids defended the flag though, saying that blood was spilled in history bla bla... Chef then screams something like: Can;t you see it's wrong? 4 white guys killing a black guy?! Then he is shocked to learn that the kids didn;t see the flag as colored as the rest did. They saw 5 people, not 4 white and 1 black. It;s ridicoulus ofcourse, but I liked the underlying tone where the "ignorant kids" were the only ones not making a racial issue out of it.... Ofcourse the flag was wrong in all ways, but hey... It's south park. Point of the episode was real nice though.)

As long as people keep thinking in races, these problems will always exist. I don;t think people should forget the troubles from the past or the struggles of our ancestors. We should always remember and take a learning from them.

Totally different subject;
For example I donnot mind going to Germany on a holiday and I really hope Vettel wins his 4th Formula-1 championship title... Even so, I hold our national memmorial day (4th of may and the following liberation day on the 5th of may) in hi-regard. I can even get emotional when speaches are made and documentairies shown. My own grandparents were greatly affected by the war.

I don't know... Am I making any sense here? I removed the pictures and changed the make-up because I don;t want to hurt anyone. I see how people can be hurt by it, but I don't see any hurt in the matter itself though. I haven;t slandered anyone, portrayed or promoted stereotypical behaviour, instigated one group against another, declared one to be better then the other. None. I tried to recreate the image of GAME character. That's it. For me the tan was the same as a wig for Snake. Again, obviously for a lot of people it is much more then that, but that's what it was and is for me.

Mmm, I understand what you're saying, but for me, race is something I live with every day--I'm of East Asian descent and I regularly have people ask me if I can speak English, can I translate this chopstick wrapper, what country am I actually from... It's annoying since I've lived in the USA all my life. So it's hard for me not to think about race, especially when I see that other people with much darker skin have a harder time of it than I do. Nevertheless, it doesn't seem like you're completely ignoring the issue--sometimes when people say 'colorblind', they mean 'I'm ignoring every current problem that race presents with today', and that's not the impression I'm getting from you. It would be wonderful if race stopped being a factor, which is why I undertook learning about these inequalities in the first place. I would like to make people more aware that these things are still around, preferably in a non-screaming, hateful sort of way because nobody likes being shouted at.

I'll have to find that South Park episode you referenced. That creative team does some really funny things with race, and the one episode with City Wok made me and the rest of my family laugh really hard. Sure it was brimming with ridiculousness, but we really appreciated the two distinct accents (Chinese and Japanese).

I usually weather my costumes extensively and so ti doesn;t matter much if there's some make-up on it.

It was a trick with Altair, for the costume was weathered with black and greys... Not brown or other earth tones. I washed that thing quite a couple of times.

If you use oil based make-up it should stick to your face better. Also, not to have... but a small mist layer of hair gel / spray can fixate the make-up. This does "lock" up your skin so don;t do this to much.
